Emptying Out the Cupboards

Dear readers, there is something I have known about for a couple months now, and have neglected to share with most of you.  And that’s not right.  You need to know.

Seems R and I will be leaving Sydney and moving back to New York at the end of this month.  I have mixed feelings about it, and I guess that’s to be expected.  Of course I’ve missed my good friends, my neighborhood of eleven years, and the city itself.  But being here, especially over the past few months, has been like living in some sort of suspended reality.  We have had a fine time traveling recently, and are now doing our best to enjoy the last of our days here in Sydney.   It’s not to say that we haven’t been affected by what’s going on, economically-speaking, in the States–in fact that’s the reason we’re leaving.   Reality will certainly hit us in the face when we get back home.  Where will we live?  That will be a scramble.  Will be both find jobs?  I’m not so sure.

There’s little we can do about either of these things from half a world away, so I’ve been trying to concentrate on what’s right in front of me, and not stress too much about November.  One important task at hand is to use up the food in the house (including my huge dried herb and spice collection).  So forgive me if I come up with some wacky combos over the next few weeks, or if I do some weird ingredient substitutions for TWD.  I’m just trying to empty out the cupboards.

Did I mention the saddest thing about leaving?  It’s Sydney itself.  I like it here, and although I knew we wouldn’t stay forever, I’m not ready to leave just yet.

  10. I am sure it has been sad to prepare to leave, it will be sad to say goodbye and will be hard to be somewhere you may not even really want to be. I hope these last weeks bring you lots of joy so that you will always treasure fond memories of Sydney.

  11. I hear ya there…I absolutely love Sydney. My husband is Australian…though we lived up near Cairns…and the vacation we took to Sydney was one of the BEST! We are now in the states, Northern California, and I so want to go back soon…

  18. I’m sure Sydney is wonderful and I’m sad you are leaving, too. However, New York is an amazing place and I’m sure you will adjust just fine.

  19. New York sounds exciting, but I can understand that leaving Sydney would be tough. I loved Australia when I visited there many moons ago! Good luck with the move. I look forward to your creative posts coming up! Love that spice box too!

    -Your pal from N.VA…

  22. Safe traveling! NY will be exciting, too. I will be there in Decemeber…will email you!

  23. Pack sweaters! This is silly, but what I’ll miss most is your middle of the night blog updates. Glad that we won’t have to go without your blog, but I’ve always loved that in the middle of the night when I can’t snooze you update and make me happy!

  24. thanks everyone for the nice wishes! i’d love to meet anyone traveling to or living in NYC! and lemontartlet, i’m gonna really miss being one of the “early” posters for everything!

  25. I am new to your blog, and am very impressed by your posts – great photos and recipes. Best of luck with the move.

  26. I understand, very well, how you must feel. I have often experienced the same feelings when moving from a location I’ve grown to love. (My husband’s military.) It is hard and so I hope you do well with your move. I will look forward to some “wacky combos”.

  27. Seems as if it was just yesterday you were unpacking boxes having moved to Australia… I remember that post actually.

I know that you had settled in and starting to enjoy things downunder; I guess that’s life eh, constantly changing.

All the best with the move and I pray that your re-entrance and re-settling at home is easy.

  28. All the best with the move. Let’s do sweets when you settle in.

  29. good luck Steph! I really feel for you having to pack up, especially now we are finally getting close to (long, glorious, perfect) Sydney summer! this winter has been bitter.. well, you know, by Sydney standards anyway!

you can always ‘visit’ electronically, at least…

and I’m sure Ian and the team at Herbies will package you up some lemon myrtle and wattleseed when you’re feeling ‘home’-sick.. some aussie-ness direct from Rozelle to NYC!

    best wishes

  30. moving is always tough, no matter where you’re moving from or where you’re moving to… the good thing about moving right now is that it’s a buyer’s market, so hopefully you’ll be able to find a great place to live (w/a huge kitchen!) for a decent price :)

  31. Oh what a shame.. but New York! Surely you must be at least a little bit excited about returning there :) I’m looking forward to seeing what wacky combinations you come up with, with the stuff you need to use up!
