allspice crumb muffins

I’m pretty slow-going in the morning, so don’t do that much breakfast baking.  That being said, I was happy to have the lovely Kayte of Grandma’s Kitchen Table chose Allspice Crumb Muffins for TWD this week.  It’s good to have my routine switched up every once and awhile.  And it’s hard to not like having a fresh, homemade muffin (especially one with streusel topping!) with my morning coffee.

Allspice isn’t a spice that I usually have on hand.  In fact, before I made this recipe I had to pay a visit to my most favorite tea and spice shop, Two for the Pot in Brooklyn, to score some.  Allspice in hand, I subbed just a bit of whole wheat flour for the AP in both the streusel and the muffin itself.  I also added in the optional lemon zest…this muffin doesn’t have bits of fruit in it, so I think the zest went a long way towards amping up the flavor a bit.  They baked up with kinda flat tops, but I can overlook that in favor of their ease and pleasant simplicity.

For the recipe, see Baking: From My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan, or read Grandma’s Kitchen Table.  Don’t forget to check out the TWD Blogroll!

P.S.:  I’m taking a quick trip out of town on my days off this week.  I won’t be in front of the computer for a few days, so please forgive my lack of comments!

  7. Your muffin doesn’t look very flat to me. Mine could have used a little whole wheat to give them some substance-brilliant idea.

  8. Beautiful muffins – a nice golden color. I know Two for the Pot – it’s a delightful store.

  9. Fantastic photo! I didn’t use the lemon but now I wish I had!

  10. Just got up… and wish I was with you in front of a cup of joe, and such a beautiful muffin… blabbing about those office workers across your street! LOL

  11. Yours muffin looks delicious! I love that crispy looking top! I live in Manhattan, but I visit Brooklyn often…I will have to check out the tea and spice shop!!

  13. I definitely agree that the lemon zest gives this muffin wonderful flavor.

Enjoy your trip Steph – I hope it’s fun related!

  14. Ils sont bien beaux tes muffins ! Moi j’ai toujours du piment de la Jamaîque, car il est à la base de beaucoup de mélange d’épices que je fais pour cuisiner :)

  15. breakfast baking is the best! especially when you make it the night ahead, freeze it and then just pop it in the oven. ;)

  16. Your tops look perfect! I love the colour and texture. The lemon zest really does add a nice flavour, but then again I would add it to just about everything if I could. :)

  17. These look delish!

  18. These muffins freeze great too. Just pop them in the toaster oven for 5 minutes and they are like they are hot out of the oven.

  19. Beautiful muffins, Steph.

  20. These look great! We’re always looking for breakfast foods. I swear my kids eat three boxes of Honeynut Cheerios per week. I’d love to switch things up!

  21. Nice picture- crisp and clear. they look great but I probably would want roasted nuts and some fruit in there if I were eating them for breakfast.

  22. I love your quiet simplicity comment for the muffins. Very well put and your muffins look great! The lemon zest must have been a great addition

  23. Your muffin looks wonderful! I meant to add the lemon zest but completely forgot so I’ll definitely be making them again. Have a nice trip!

  24. Yum! I’m not a morning baker either, so I did mine the night before. A very quick pop in the microwave did the trick!

  25. I love your muffins ! Have a nice trip !!!

  26. Hi Steph!

How are you? I hope you’re having lots of fun on your trip- can’t wait to hear where you went! I’m sorry I haven’t been by to say hello recently- I’ve been going through a difficult time with some family stuff, so I haven’t been on the computer too much. But I’ve missed talking to you and I look forward to catching up when you return :)

Your muffins look really delish, by the way- and that killer pie from the last post- just GORGEOUS! Is that your favorite pastry dough? I usually turn to the CI recipe that calls for vodka in place of some of the ice water. But if you have a go-to recipe that works well for you, I will definitely give it a try, especially with the holidays coming up! Have you had a chance to make this month’s Cake Slice recipe yet? I think I’ll be baking either tomorrow or the next day, so if you have any tips or tricks, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! Or just email if you feel like saying hi- it’s always a treat to find a message from you!

Okay, well I hope you’re doing well and look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sending much love from Boston (yes, you remembered correctly!),
    Joy

  27. Mmm streusel on top of muffins — one of my favorite things!

  28. I like the idea of a little WW flour in these, I bet that was good. I really like the twist of lemon as well. Thanks for the heads up about the spice and tea shop. I will have to send them some of my product info. Maybe they could use some new spice containers in their inventory!

  29. Gorgeous job! I’m more a fan of savory breakfasty things over sweet, but I didn’t mind making an exception for these.

  30. I don’t know how you do this week in and week out, having the most beautiful photos and the most delicious looking food! These muffins look perfect! Thanks for baking with me this week…always a treat to come and visit and see what you are up to over here…always something delicious!

  33. flat tops are actually what I aim for when i bake muffins :0) I made the wholemeal sub as well and loved it

  34. Your muffins look wonderful! I loved these, but what’s not to love about something with a streusel topping!

  35. Muffins (especially crumb ones) are seriously the most comforting thing on a cool fall morning. With a nice mug of coffee or tea! Looks delicious :)

  36. I think you are right about the lemon zest. It probably did amp the flavor up a bit. :)

  37. Your muffins look perfect – flat top and all. =)

  38. Looks perfect! I agree that it’s nice to have an excuse to make yummy breakfast treats.

  39. It’s always nice to have an excuse to visit a spice shop. And this was a good excuse. Your muffins look terrific!

  40. Your muffin look great! Have fun on your trip!

  41. I loved the allspice streusel topping and the lemon zest is really nice with it. I thought these were pretty nice little muffins and intend to make them according to the recipe. I enjoyed playing around with some substitutions this time. So it’ll be good to compare.
