chocolate oatmeal drops

I love chocolate.  I love oatmeal.  Naturally I’d been hoping that we’d get to make these Chocolate Oatmeal Drops sooner rather than later.  Yet, when their turn rolled around, I wasn’t at first convinced.  They seemed a little dry to me…like maybe the oats had robbed the cookies of some of their moisture.  I almost never bake off a whole batch of cookies at once though, so into the freezer went a slew of scooped out raw dough drops.

I pulled a handful of scoops out a few days later and baked them off, shortcutting the recommended time by just a minute or so.  They were not at all raw inside, but soft and really chocolatey, just the way I’d hoped they would be.  So, now I am convinced: chocolate + oatmeal = tasty cookies.

For the recipe, see Baking: From My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan or read Bake With Us, as Caroline and Claire picked it this week.  Don’t forget to check out the TWD Blogroll!

  1. I am glad that they redeemed themselves the second time around. I really dug them. Thanks so much for baking with us this week. BTW, great photo!!!

  2. They look delicious. I love how thick and soft they are.

  3. I was pleasantly surpised by the oats and chocolate too – these were good.

  4. Gorgeous Steph. It looks like an oatmeal brownie!

  5. They look wonderful–perfectly moist! I didn’t get around to these this week, but another time, hopefully. About the canal: we do have an 8km canal winding through the centre of the city and I skate home as often as I can in winter. It’s special and quite beautiful, even if it need to be freezing to use it.
    🙂

  6. These look so rich and chewy…the kind that would leave chocolate all over your fingers. Just the way cookies should be. 😀

  7. Hmmm – this cookie looks so rich and sinfully delicious.

  8. They look soo good! Im glad you enjoyed them. I love anything with oatmeal in it! Well maybe not pizza…but you know ..baked goods!!

  9. How did you photograph a hideous looking cookie and make it look as good as it tastes? Hmmm…that is magic :).

  10. We loved these. I was also afraid they would be dry but no, they were just right. Yours look thicker than mine and so much better, as a result.

  11. Yours look a lot fatter than mine! I had such a hard time figuring out how to photograph these. I think these cookies would have baked up differently had I refrigerated the dough; that’s probably why yours look different than my little flat shaggy cookies!

  12. Looks like the perfect thick & chewy cookie – beautiful job, Steph! 🙂

  13. Awesome photo! That’s about as pretty as these cookies get! I’m impressed that you gave them a second chance, well done!

  14. Happy they made the cut on the second go! 🙂 They look wonderful…..love the thickness–now, that’s a cookie! Almost like a levain cookie! (yum).

  15. One can really see the great texture of these in your pictures!

  16. Yum…that cookie is drool worthy!

  17. I really like how you can see the oatmeal grains in your photo!

  18. I love the chocolate/oat combination! First of all it makes me feel a bit better (more healthy chocolate!), secondly I sometimes add about 1/2 c. minute oats to brownies, helps to make it extra chewy!

  19. I’ve made regular chocolate chip oatmeal cookies but I’ve never made them this way. I love the flavor of oats in baked goods. I’ll have to try this one. 🙂

  20. I like to decrease my cooking time even more…I like them doughy on the inside.

  21. Chocolate and oatmeal cookies are some of my favorites–especially with almond flavoring. Impressed with your picture–chocolate is always challenging!

  22. Ooh, these look wonderful. Reminds me of no bake cookies a little bit, with way more chocolate.

  23. I talked myself out of messing with chocolate this week so I missed making these…maybe I should go back and make them for the guys after all…your photo and words certainly make a good case for it.

  24. Found these….thanks for the baking tip. I also love chocolate. Wonder if the other folks around me get tired of it. I don’t. He he. Ah well it’s the life
    Nice photo as always
