It had never occurred to me before, but I tried your grating idea and it worked very well. Many thanks.
Not very traditional but I used some cinnamon in addition to the nutmeg which we all love.
The result was a fine batch of scones which we enjoyed with our favourite morning coffee, Yemeni Matari coffee from The Tea and Coffee Emporium.
Thanks for the post and the opportunity to comment.

Yours look so good, they rose so much. Mine were flatter and didn't keep their shape as much. Maybe I will try grating the butter in. My husband did that once with biscuits and the kitchen was a total mess!

I added dried apples to mine, which added some sweetness.

I wanted to use at least a portion of whole wheat pastry flour, but I was out. I'm glad to know it works as well as I was thinking.

I might try the grating trick next time. My scones come out well, I just don't like rubbing the butter into the flour. Actually, it's the cleaning buttery flour out of my fingernails that I really don't like.
