Whoosie-whatsit?? I was wondering when someone would have us make these little bits of deep-fried goodness with the crazy name. Then along comes Teanna of Spork or Foon? to banish our fears of frying.
Little strips of fried dough, scherben are easy to make. They don’t taste like much naked, but if you toss them in cinnamon sugar when they are just out of the oil and then sprinkle them with 10x, yeah, they’re pretty addictive…which is good, because if you live in an apartment where the windows don’t open and the stovetop doesn’t vent to the outside, you will be reminded of your frying escapades for days to come.
For the recipe, see Baking: From My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan, or read Spork or Foon? Don’t forget to check out the TWD Blogroll!

Haha I am suffering the same problem from the oil. Sadly, when I chose this, I had never fried anything, so I had no idea about the smell it would leave! Oof! Thanks for frying along with me this week!

They look beautiful! My vanilla-scented candle did a fairly good job with the grease problem, I just kept it burning and everything smelled like vanilla and powdered sugar…what’s not to love about that??? Yours look wonderful, and I know my guys are going to want these again very soon.

Your cookies look perfect. Now you have to cook something with apples and cinnamon to spice up your place.

Hate that lingering frying smell. Your scherben are beautiful. I thought they needed a lot of sugar to make them tasty.

These look perfect – just as they should! Mine, not so much, but I went “fry-less”! Glad you liked them and love the photograph!

I think there are a lot of kitchens still smelling like fried dough!
Comment by Spike— January 12, 2010 #
I think deep frying would have made these a bit more palatable – I baked mine and they were very average

Stephanie – I was looking for the original Scherben picture to include it in my blog for giving a picture how they should look like. But I dind’t find it in a reasonable time. Your Scherben just look perfect so I “borrowed” your picture (for sure I mentioned the source!) and hope it is ok. If not – just tell me and I delete it by now!

Perfect.

Yes, the smell – the horrible smell of oil that lingers for days. Definitely the worst part of this experience for me because otherwise these treats were delicious. Great shot of your scherben – they’re perfect!

Your scherben looks wonderful! These were rather addictive little things, and it was definitely the lingering frying oil smell that got me to stop eating them…
Comment by Sarah— January 13, 2010 #
LOL – naked they really aren’t much, but they look so pretty dusted with all of that sugar. Nice job.
Comment by Cakelaw— January 14, 2010 #
I found myself picking the pieces out of the sugar at the bottom of the bag by the end!

I can imagine these would have a bit of a cinammon donut flavour to them.. mmm… If only someone would make it possible to taste and smell online!

Loooks delish! Lucky you though, everytime I fry something, it gets soggy waay too fast! I imagine it would be lovely with an espresso candle burning. 🙂

Heehee.. that would’ve been my exact response too! But they look so delicious, no matter what the name.
