Tuesdays with Dorie BWD: Breakfast-in-Rome Lemon Cake

Somehow neither The White Lotus nor seemingly the entire world’s fabulously dreamy Instagram summer vacay pics have spurred me to book a flight to Italy yet, but this Breakfast-in-Rome Lemon Cake may do the trick. I can imagine being pretty happy for a few days to wake up to a double espresso and a slice of the breakfast/snack tube cake known as chiambella. Until I get my passport renewed, luckily Dorie has provided us with her Italian vacation version to bake at home. She makes a lemony separated egg sponge that results in a tall, light, bouncy cake. Berries are optional, but since I had some frozen blackberries in my mess of a freezer, I rummaged around and found them. If I’m going all the way to Italy, I’m not just going to Rome…I’m also going to the Almalfi Coast, so I drizzled the top of my cake with a little limoncello while it was still warm and at its most absorbant for another hit of lemon.
If you don’t have the book Baking with Dorie: Sweet, Salty & Simple by Dorie Greenspan yet, get it and join us as we bake through it every second and fourth Tuesdays! Don’t forget to check out the rest of the TWD Blogroll and all the other participation deets over on Tuesdays with Dorie!

I love the limoncello idea. The more lemon the better!

Oh gosh, loved your post…and it made me reminiscent of my trip to Italy and Spain when our son finished his semester abroad. We went to Florence, Tuscany, and Rome and loved every second! I would say my favorite was the gelato, didn’t really have cake 😂🥰…but your cake looks pretty amazing! I would love to have the blackberries and wonder if that changes the taste much from the blueberries I used.

Double espresso and a slice of the breakfast lemon cake do it for me too. The pairing is as amazing as it gets; limoncello adds icing to the cake.

That looks beautiful, and that limoncello business sounds very fine. Next time, I will try that…made a note in my book under “Boozy Steph tips.” LOL. When you get your passport renewed, you should plan a trip here…I think one needs a passport to get here from NY. Okay…enough with the jokes, your cake is gorgeous.

limoncello is a great idea, I still have a bottle languishing in my pantry. Berries and lemon seem to be the theme of the week. Thanks for the well wishes I am better now and on vacation in Mexico.

Your cake looks large and lush. I like the idea of sprinkling it with limoncello- I wish I’d read your post before making this cake.
