triple chocolate fudge cake

Oh…Triple Chocolate Fudge Cake…the last cake The Cake Slice Bakers are making as a group from Sky High: Irresistible Triple Layer Cakes.  Sad, but just because the group will be moving on to a new book next month, Sky High won’t be gathering dust on the shelf.  After thirteen cakes, it has proven to be one of my favorite books, and I want to make just about every other thing in it!

This cake is like a high-class Ding Dong (although when and where I grew up, they were called “King Dons“).  If you were raised, as I was, in a house where such “crème-filled” delicacies were banned, then it will make you very happy.  A moist and dark devil’s food-like cake (made with mayo…but don’t be put off, because you’d never know!) is filled with a white chocolate mousse and frosted with chocolate sour cream frosting.  A piece of advice…my white chocolate filling seemed a bit too soft to use straight away, so I stashed it, still in its bowl, in the fridge for about half an hour to firm up before using it.

The cake is so rich and good– I think we’re seeing this book off with a bang!  Here’s a printable link to the recipe.  Better yet, get your hands on a copy of Sky High: Irresistible Triple Layer Cakes by Alicia Huntsman and Peter Wynne…you won’t be sorry.  Cruise through the list of The Cake Slice Bakers to check out all of our sky-high cakes this month, and stay tuned for next month’s new book!

whooooa. YUM! Mayonnaise is an unusual ingredient, ive never seen it used in any sweet recipes before. It looks like the recipe could be veganised 🙂 perhaps I will try it.

Steph – Sky High IS a wonderful book – I wish I had known/joined the group – the book is among many that doesn’t get used as much as I’d like (too many other things to bake). This cake looks MARVELOUS! Wow…. it’s perfect! I love the look of 3-layer cakes… so fancy. And I agree – it definitely looks moist, this will have to be a “must bake” Fall cake I think….thanks for making and posting such a beautiful cake!

Ahhh this looks like heaven- Triple chocolate anything is generally amazing. I’m not a big fan of Ding Dongs because they taste so processed, but yes, this does look like the gourmet version and I’m pretty sure I’d LOVE it!

Ciao ! I love the perfection of your cake !!! Wasn’t it delicious ?

Your cake is beautiful and looks so delicious! I just made the 3-layer devil’s food cake, from the same book, for my husband’s birthday yesterday and will be doing a post about that cake soon. I LOVE the book! It’s really wonderful and I assume I will be relying upon it many more times in the future. Glad to know you have tried quite a few of the recipes and can vouch for Sky High’s consistency and reliability.

That chocolate frosting is so shiney, Like a dark satin! This looks amazing. I too grew up in a no candy/prepackaged dessert household. I had to settle for fruits and yogurts instead. Maybe this is why we love to bake! 🙂

Your cake looks incredible and the mousse filling so even. Yes, it needs time to firm up in the fridge. Great advice.

I love this book too and I have turned to it many times outside of the group for for fabulous cakes. I highly recommend it.

That looks sensational. Just what I need for morning tea. Well done.

Great job on your cake challenge! Just by looking at the pics, I’m wishing I had some more left right now. It sure was a moist cake, that’s for sure.

Looks so delicious and moist – I have got to try making some layer cakes soon.

King Don? Really? Huh – we didn’t really have them in our house at all, but the upscale version does look pretty fantastic!

I applaud you for getting such a nice, neat slice of cake for your photo. Haha, mine looked like I sliced it with a chainsaw! I did the same thing with my mousse in the fridge. It seemed like chocolate soupy at first. I was scared! But all was well in the end! 😀 Great job!

Your cake looks fabulous! I am intrigued by the inclusion of mayo…one more reason to go out and buy this book.

Slightly random question, I’ve been following your blog for a while now, drooling over the cakes and anxiously awaiting when The Cake Slice group will open up for new members. But I can’t for the life of me find on the main blog how I request to become a member. Could you help a girl out? 🙂 Do you know who I would need to contact? Thanks!!!

This cake looks fabulously rich! I’m definitely putting Sky High on my wish list.

    Hi Steph

I was wondering when you put the filling in the refrigerator, was it covered with plastic wrap or uncovered.

    • steph (whisk/spoon)'s avatar

I just left it uncovered, since it was only in there for 30 mins. Either way’s fine, I’m sure.

  33. Hilary's avatar

    It’s high time I bought this book…

  34. Katherine's avatar

The cake looks fantastic. Mayo on a cake hmmm I have never heard of that. I will need to try this recipe out for myself.

Absolutely fabulous cake!!! I am wondering how I go about joining the Cake Slice group?? Help??
