cherry-fudge brownie torte

Let me begin this post with a PSA:  Texting while baking can lead to accidents in the kitchen.  For instance, if, while you are baking Dorie’s Cherry-Fudge Brownie Torte for TWD, you are also texting one friend about meeting for lunch and another friend about meeting for drinks, it may not register that the recipe calls for cherry preserves and extra chopped chocolate to be stirred into the brownie base .  Trust me, I know!  Lucky for me it happened with a forgiving cake.

This is definitely a dense and super-rich dessert.  The base is essentially a double-height brownie.  It was a little too full-on for me, actually.  But the mascarpone mousse topping…that is was really nice and light as a feather.  While I probably won’t be making this complete dessert again, I think the mousse would make a fantastic cake filling and I’ll keep it in mind.

For the recipe, see Baking: From My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan, or read Short + Rose, as it was April’s choice this week.  Don’t forget to check out the TWD Blogroll!

  1. I don’t know which word in the title appeals to me more…cherry? fudge? brownie? or torte……..a combination that is a winner for sure!!!

  2. Mmm…that certainly looks delicious! It would go over well for breakfast around here.

  3. Delicate and solid at the same time. I wish I could sink my fork into the computer screen right now!

  4. I’m glad it came out well ! I liked it too !!

  5. The cake looks gorgeous. It reminds me of a black forest cake. I have been contemplating on getting the book – this recipe seals the deal for me!

  6. Steph, I couldn’t agree more about the richness of this dessert. Loved the mousse too. And I also added all the chocolate instead of stirring in the last chopped portion. Anyway, yours is beautiful. The mousse as a filling is a great idea.

  7. That looks amazing! I really want to join Tuesdays with Dorie, but I’m afraid all I’ll do is eat. I have no self control.

  8. Thanks for baking with me this week! It looks great. Multi-tasking in the kitchen can be dangerous I found out on more than one occassion.

  9. This looks fantastic. I love the swirls on the plate and the frosting is divine! Im sorry I had to miss this one..way to many goodies in my house. I did post a good old recipe of a coffee cake!

  10. Yum! That mousse certainly does look good!

  11. That mousse was to die for. So yummy. I won’t be making this one again either but I will be making that mousse. It looks wonderful.

  12. What a cute little cake! I made a quarter recipe in a mini springform, so it turned out quite a bit like yours (minus the mousse). And I don’t think I’d miss the chocolate chunks or cherry preserves – the chocolate interrupted the brownie quite a bit, and I couldn’t taste the preserves.

  13. Oh my, that is a gorgeous photo. I adore those little cherry swirls on the plate. Great work!

  14. I thought this was full on the first bite, but it made me want to keep coming back for a little bit more. yours looks delicious

  15. Your torte looks unbeleiveable!! Even with forgetting to out a few ingredients in, I bet it was still great!!!

  16. Looks wonderful! This was one of my faves!

  17. I actually made the full size cake on this one and had to throw it out when it started to become breakfast. Very addicting. Yours looks awesome!

  18. Yes, sometimes twittering while baking is bad too.

Your torte looks wonderful and delicious!

  19. Those omissions really wouldn’t have mattered – the brownie part was lovely with no extras. Yours looks great – I bags the wedge in the photo 😉

  20. Love your little slice of the torte – so cute! I had to sit out this week but I am definitely intrigued by the mascarpone mousse so I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it.

  21. Very well done Steph! I was very surprised by that cake… didn’t expect much and it turned out to be very nice and tasty! But in the end really… it didn’t taste much of cherries, so you didn’t miss much.

  22. First of all, I love your new header! And secondly, the torte looks gorgeous! Sorry you weren’t a fan, but at least you liked the mousse!

  23. Your brownie torte looks just beautiful! I love the swirls of cherry on the plate! Using the mousse as a cake filling is an excellent idea too! =)
