chocolate cream tart

TWD started April with a Banana Cream Pie, moved on to two intense chocolate desserts and, thanks to Kim of Scrumptious Photography, we ended April with a Chocolate Cream Tart.  It’s as if we’ve come full circle, really.  Okay, maybe that’s pushing it, but sometimes I think it’s funny how the choices each month shake out.

Chocolate pastry cream with whipped cream on top, all in a chocolate crust– oh my word!  I went halvsies with this week’s recipe, and had plenty for six individual-sized tarts.  These little guys are super-chocolaty and super-good!  R and I ate them in contented silence…then neither of us could move to do the dishes afterward!  Some thought that all that chocolate was a bit too much, and opted for a plain tart crust instead.  Personally, I wouldn’t change a thing.  I was quite happy to try out Dorie’s chocolate shortbread crust recipe, and liked it a lot.  I did find, though, that when making the dough, it was a little dry.  I had to add a couple teaspoons of milk to get it to come together, but then it was pretty easy to work with.

For the recipe, see Baking: From My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan, or read Kim’s post.  Don’t forget to check out the TWD Blogroll!

Your tart looks wonderful! I agree, I wouldn’t change a thing.

  29. Kimberly's avatar

Your tart looks lovely! My crust was really dry and crumbly. I wish I would have though to add some milk! It seemed fine when I pressed it into the tart pans though.

  37. Karen's avatar

you know, i also halved the recipe and added a whole egg yolk by mistake. at first i wasn’t sure about it but it really helped my dough come together and i could smoosh it with no problems. much better than dealing with crumbly dough! your tart looks awesome.

  38. Elyse's avatar

Bring on the chocolate on chocolate combo. Sounds totally delicious, and your pic is just making my mouth water. Really, I don’t think much can be a chocolate cream tart. How sophisticated yet comfort-food-y! Loving it.

  39. michael's avatar

Sprinkles…. PERFECT! I agree – the folk that ate mine LOVED the crust – and in fact, everything. I wouldn’t change anything…. yours look fantastic. Those choco-sprinkles are the perfect touch!

What a great idea to add milk to the crumbly dough! I wish I had done that too. Great looking chocolate tart, glad that you enjoyed it!

  44. Rebecca's avatar

SO cute! I really like the chocolate crust, too. My sister was disappointed that it wasn’t sweeter, like an Oreo crust, but I thought it complemented the filling without going over the top.

Yes, it was rich and delish, but sometimes it’s worth it and this is one of those times. Yours looks absolutely amazing!! As always! 😉
